Scholarship

  • Jimmy Elms Memorial Scholarship
    AWARD AMOUNT: $300

Jimmy Elms grew up sailing in San Diego and came to UC Irvine in 1988.  He rushed Sigma Chi that year and became a pledge of the Alpha Beta Pledge Class.  Jimmy’s pledge class felt that he best exemplified Sigma Chi Founder Benjamin Piatt Runkle for his quality of courage, which he instilled in his pledge brothers.  Jimmy was fearless and always stood up for what he believed. He also had a congenial disposition and made friends with everyone he encountered.  Every brother that knew him really appreciated his worth.  Jimmy knew how to have a good time and at the same time, was responsible. He excelled in his studies, enjoyed playing Ultimate Frisbee with brothers, and was quite social.

After graduation, Jimmy moved back down to San Diego to help with his family business of silk screening. He continued to enjoy the outdoors, sailing, surfing, and kite surfing. He was diagnosed with melanoma in 2005 and passed away on May 12, 2006. He will always be remembered for his courage.  Even through the hard times of cancer treatment and surgeries, Jimmy held his head high.  He was comforted by not only his immediate family, but through his extended family of Sigma Chi brothers.  He always had the comfort of knowing that there were strong arms around him, and true hearts upon which to rest.  Jimmy fought the good fight, and will always be remembered by his brothers. It is in honor and memory of brother Jimmy Elms that our chapter has made the decision to offer a scholarship in his name.

  • Excellence in Community Service Scholarship

    AWARD AMOUNT: $100

The Sigma Chi Fratenrity is commiitted to service and to helping those in our communities whom are less fortunate and in need of assistance. It is because of this committment that our chapter at UC Irvine has excelled in commuity service and have won the Aldrich Award for Excellence in Commmunity Relations for the past three years. Our chapter has also raised over $24,000 over the past three years for charitable organizations. This past school year the Office of the Dean of Students at UC Irvine awarded our chapter the Community Service and Humanitarian Award over all other campus organizations in and out of the Greek community. Our chapter would like to promote and encourage others to share with us our committment to service and has decided to award a scholarship to an incoming freshman who exemplifies our values and shares our dedication to helping the community.

  • Excellence in Athletic Achievement Scholarship

    AWARD AMOUNT: $100

Our chapter believes that a balance must exist in your life if you wish to succeed in college and in a working environment. We know that committing your time to athletics and managing your studies at the same time can often be a challenging experience, but also very rewarding. Through athletics you learn how to work with a team of individuals who may be very different than you. You also often learn how to lead a group of men through victroy and defeat. These are invaluable experiences and skills that will help you throughout your life. The Sigma Chi Fraternity is a brotherhood rooted in both teamwork and leadership and we would like to recognize others who demonstrate these strengths in their lives.
